I’ve never been one for sustained discipline, especially when it comes to New Year’s resolutions. I like the idea, but find it difficult to maintain the discipline and interest required to see through the year. I have an issue with instant gratification and this is why I can’t remember the last time I jotted down a list of New Year Resolutions. Call it a commitment issue or perhaps laziness; resolutions and I have never got on.
But the thing is, I see the appeal of goal setting, and while ideas of goals work so much better for me, I’ve had to find a way to make it work with my “ I need to see results” mentality. And so, over the last couple of years, I have a process that works for me. Smaller achievable goals, that give me that instantaneous, well almost, dopamine hit, that eventually lead to the bigger goals. You see, the end game is all the same regardless of how you got there.
I’ve always preferred the simplistic road when it comes to my skin, more like forced into it by the extremely sensitive nature of my skin. However, the last couple of years have seen a boom in skincare, from LED light therapy to longevity advancement (and if you're unfamiliar with the term longevity, and what it has to do with skincare, I wrote all about it here). Like a kid in a candy store, it was all a little too much for me. For the first time in a long time, my skincare routine has reached peak excessiveness and my skin is not happy. This year, my beauty resolution is to turn it down, WAY DOWN!
There is something intriguing about other’s New Year’s resolutions or goals, and so I reached out to a couple of my peers in the beauty industry, to find out what their beauty goals were for the year.
Lucy Pemberton, Beauty Writer & Social Media Editor:
“My beauty new years resolution is to explore the artistry itself. From zoella vlogs to diving into my Mother’s makeup bag as a young girl, I have been beauty obsessed since day dot. In 2023, I had the opportunity to do the makeup on set for my friends graduate collection. The way I was totally immersed in the moment and focused on one face in a room full of people, rushing around, was a really special feeling. The attention to detail and the idea that makeup can transform a face into a new identity, was magical to me. It was a really intimate and beautiful process that I want to explore more. So, alongside fine tuning my writing, I will assist MUA’s, learn from other industry greats and bless my 2024 with many new skills!”
Lollie Hancock, Beauty Journalist:
‘‘Making time for tech. There’s so many amazing technologies available on the market to boost your skin from the comfort of your own home - the key, like for most things, is consistency. In 2024 I’m going to make sure tech is at the top of my priorities list as I’m make more time for at home treatments, through LED, massage tools, toning devices and more!’’
Humeara Mohamed, Beauty & Fashion Journalist & Copywriter:
“My beauty resolution is to be appreciate my skin more, sans makeup. I love makeup, don’t get me wrong, but it definitely skews my expectation of what my skin should look like naturally, and I don’t want to feel like I *have* to wear foundation 24/7. Makeup should be fun, not a morning chore. This resolution ties in with self-acceptance, which isn’t easy or quick to achieve, but I’m hoping I’ll be a little bit better at loving my skin by this time next year. A little progress is still progress.”
Arabelle Sicardi, Beauty Writer:
“My resolution is to be more playful with looks and don’t be afraid to ask for advice or help. I want my exploration of beauty to always feel like a gift that expands my worldview not a game I’m going to lose at for
not keeping up with societal pressures. I’m going to be starting beauty school this year so I hope to make friends learning there and find more community to create with.”
Isabel Deibe, Beauty & fashion Journalist:
“My beauty resolution is to get more creative with my makeup. I’ve become lazy and fallen a little bit out of love with makeup. I have to film content on a daily basis so I always do the bare minimum beat, focussing on giving myself a glowy, clear-looking complexion. I don’t really get experimental with eye makeup or lip combo anymore, and makeup has become more of a chore than something fun, therapeutic and creative. This year I’m committing to wearing more makeup, switching up the products I’m using and finding joy in painting my face again.”
Mia Lyndon, Beauty Journalist:
“My lipstick collection has doubled in 2023, but there’s one problem: I never wear any of it. Mask wearing during COVID times put me off lipstick for life - the idea of smudged, sticky lipstick smeared inside a mask still makes me cringe. So, with mandatory mask wearing now well behind us, my 2024 resolution is to pop on a bit of lippy.”
Dionne Brighton, Beauty Journalist:
“This year, my beauty resolution is to invest in professional treatments. I have a pretty extensive skincare routine, and no evening goes by without using my favourite retinol. Although it has massively improved my skin, I still have a mix of ice pick and boxcar scars that need the help of a dermatologist. It's been my New Year's resolution for the past two years, but I've always put it off, so this is the year I find a professional I can trust and take the leap. I'm thinking laser or microneedling, but I'll wait to see what the pros say. Aside from that, I want to start being adventurous with my makeup looks.”
Lauren Wigley, Beauty & Wellness Journalist:
“It will be the year I turn 35 which seems both bizarre and terrifying at the same time. Although it’s almost impossible to escape the narrative of enteral bouncy skinned youth which practically screams out of every app or advert I come across, I think this year I will try and embrace ageing with a little more grace (and a lot less comparison). The silver streak blossoming at the crown of my head could perhaps become a striking feature! And I’m going to go for a lot more laughter lines to catch up with the peppering (read: smothering) of ‘worry’ lines I’ve accumulated over the past few years. No resolution for one product or routine particularly, but as saccharine as it sounds, maybe a sprinkle more self love.”
Happy New Year! And if you’re one for New year’s resolutions, please share your beauty resolution. Thank you for reading and specifically Kelly, who has the most glorious curly hair xx.
My resolution: to use up allll the packette and deluxe samples I've been saving 'for travel', because I really don't travel that much. To go through all my half used skincare and hair care and use them up. And then figure out what I really need and what is missing.
